Map of Snead's Beach on Cedar Island

This undated map shows the 250 acre tract of land known as Snead's Beach, on the north side of Cedar Island. It is copied from the 1793 surveyor's record.

Deed of Trust of Snead land to Upshur B. Quinby, 10 April 1875

This deed, dated 10 April 1875, describes Upshur B. Quinby's purchase of three lots of the Snead property near Onancock from the special commissioner John Neely. Quinby agreed to pay $1515 for the lots, which together contained 33.45 acres. The deed also describes the subdivision of the Snead farm and the reservation of rights-of-way for drainage and roads.

Letter from N.J.W. LeCato to U.B. Quinby, 18 January 1883

Nathaniel J.W. LeCato wrote from New York to elaborate on his bond to Voss, which acts as a lien on the title of the Benson farm. He informs Quinby that Mrs. Voss has assigned the bond to John Emmons, a mutual friend whom LeCato has agreed to pay $100 in order to settle the matter and clear the Benson title.

Deed of Sale of lot near Onancock Academy

This deed describes the purchase of a small tract of land in Onancock, Accomack County by Thomas C. Pitts, Upshur B. Quinby and others, from Henry F. Powell. Powell sold the one-half acre lot adjacent to the Onancock Academy property for $125 on 4 September 1879.

Deed of Sale of Walker Farm to Thomas S. Richardson

This deed described Thomas S. Richardson's purchase of the Walker Farm near Pungoteague from the estate of James K. Walker, subject to Mary A. Walker's dower in the land. Thomas S. Richardson bought the 378.45 acres at public auction for $2662.75.

These notes describe changes in ownership of portions of Cedar Island as recorded in Deed Books and Will Books. Pages 5 and 6 are recorded on an advertisement for the Marine Bank of Norfolk.

List of Lands and Taxes thereon for the Year 1889

This list itemizes Upshur B. Quinby's properties, their size, assessed values and the taxes levied. Taxation is divided between state tax, state school tax, county levy, county school tax and district school tax.

Deed of Sale of "Davis Farm" to Upshur B. Quinby

This deed describes Upshur B. Quinby's purchase of the Davis Farm in Upshur's Neck, Accomack County, at auction in 1888. The farm is composed of two lots and includes 17 acres of marshland. The first lot, 108.17 acres, Quinby purchased for $1200; the second, 103.61 acres, for $1470. Quinby paid $133.50 in cash and executed three bonds of $845.50 each. The deed is dated November 17, 1888.

Sale of Clark's Swamp to Upshur B. Quinby

This deed describes the sale of Clark's Swamp, a 34.58 acre tract near Machapungo Creek, to Upshur B. Quinby for $345.80. This tract is bordered on two sides by the "Walter Land."

Letter from N.J.W. LeCato to U.B. Quinby, 8 January 1883

Nathaniel J.W. LeCato wrote from New York to inform Upshur Quinby that he found H.B. Voss' widow, who had remarried and had no knowledge of her husband's lien on the Benson Farm. LeCato urged Quinby to send the appropriate documents for her to sign so that they might settle Voss' claim. Quinby responded to the letter on January 15, 1883.
