Transportation -- Water - Strandings

The steamer Northampton, plying between Norfolk and points on the Eastern Shore, lost her bearing in the dense fog of Friday of last week and ran aground on the bar about two miles from Cherrystone wharf. She had not been gotten off according to the latest advices.

The New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad Company have completed their line of wire, which connects with the cable which was recently laid between Cape Charles and Henry, so that direct communication can be had with Norfolk and points South.

Large quantities of sweet potatoes are now being sent to market, and satisfactory returns so far have been received for them. The yield is not large, but all good -- hence possibly the good prices.

Weather -- Heat wave

Sylvia Beach and Peter Duffey, colored, died from the effects of heat in the county during the week. The death of several other colored people, to which the heat to some extent contributed, are also reported.
