Between 1870 and 1935 the people of the Eastern Shore of Virginia witnessed a transportation revolution in the coming of the railroad and the automobile, the introduction of technologies such as the telephone and electric power, the expansion of the market for local produce across the United States and into foreign countries, a doubling of the local population, and the construction of new houses, businesses, depots, wharves, and roads.
