RICHMOND, Va., Dec. 1. -- No one here expects President-elect Cleveland to appear in Chancery Court Monday in response to the summons served on him [on Hog Island] in the suit of Willis B. Smith. That paper was nothing more than a formal notice to Mr. Cleveland to appear on that day, either in person or by counsel, and defend his interests.

Mr. Cleveland, as a member of the Debt Advisory Board, was, it seems, made a part defendant to Mr. Smith's complaint, out of abundant caution. The plaintiff says he did not expect Mr. Cleveland to appear in court. He may, if he considered it proper to notice the matter at all, send his deposition here to be used in the case.

Mr. Smith says he expects to get his claim of $5,000 out of the $750,000 commission which the Debt Committee received.
