Eastville, Va., April 17 -- Luther Belote, who is under charges of criminal assault on Mrs. William Johnson, of the upper part of this county, surrendered himself to the authorities and has been brought to Eastville. He today had his preliminary hearing before Justice H. L. Upshur. The hearing was waived by the attorneys for the defense and application was then made for bail before the bail commissioner, Mr. T. B. Robertson, who fixed the amount at $3,000.

The victim was the sister-in-law of the perpetrator, and the families had been intimate. Mrs. Johnson was sick from the effects for some time. A reward of $400 had been offered for the arrest of Belote.

Charles Finley, of New York, was run down by an early freight yesterday morning and almost killed. The trainmen did not find him afterwards, but several persons passing later found him in an insensible condition, and he was brought here and taken to jail for lack of a better place. Dr. S. P. Nottingham attended him and he is now doing well. He will be allowed to go as soon as he can, there being no charge against him.

The Northampton County Board of Supervisors held a meeting here yesterday and made a contract for the building of a new jail. It is to be located just in the rear of the present one, and is to be 26x30 feet, with four steel cells and two extra rooms. the cost is to be $4,700. The supervisors have ordered bonds for that amount to bear interest at 5%, and redeemable after five years.
