Eastville, Va. January 1. -- Howard Belote, a young white man of respectable family, committed an attempted assault on Mrs. William Johnson at the home of the latter. It had, however, not become publicly known until yesterday when a warrant was sworn out by Mr. Johnson and put into the hands of the Sheriff C. M. Lankford. Belote, however, departed for parts unknown and has not yet been apprehended. It seems that Belote entered the home of Mr. Johnson in the absence of the latter and but for the timely aid of neighbors would have succeeded in his purpose. The two families were near neighbors and intimate, Mrs. Johnson being a sister of Mrs. Belote. The people of the community are much aroused and every effort will be made to catch the criminal.

A number of the young people leave this week for the schools, after the holiday season. Professor Johnson and Misses Lynne and Bates have returned from their holiday visits and opened school in the Academy building again today.
