Eastville, Va., July 9 -- Mr. tankard Kellam, constable of Lee district, in Accomac count, had a very exciting chase after a negro man near Cheriton last night. Tobe Ames was wanted in Accomac for felonious shooting. Mr. Kellam came down on the afternoon train, enlisted the services of Sheriff Samuel A. Jarvis and went after his game. He found the criminal at the place reported, but before he could corral his game, Tobe broke for the timber with Constable Kellam in hot pursuit firing as he went. At one shot the negro was hit or stumbled, but before the officer could come up he had gotten on his feet and made good his escape. He has not yet been apprehended.

Mr. R. T. Carter, sawyer of the Disharoon Company here, had his hand badly crushed this morning. Medical attention was procured at once and he was given relief.

The Belote trial, which was fixed for tomorrow, has been postponed until next court.

The truckers of this county are as busy as can be shipping their round potatoes. Only a little over half the crop has as yet been shipped. The growers cannot secure barrels and after that problem comes the difficulty of getting the shipments promptly to market. It is likely that the county never before has had such a large crop of potatoes to market. In this case the whole county is shipping at once, while usually the southern part finishes up before the others are fully under way.
