Cape Charles, Va., August 15.

The first day of the Chesapeake fair was very well attended, although the weather was very threatening. The exhibition halls were filled with all kinds of exhibits, principally from the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland.

A game of ball was played this morning on the Fair Grounds by the Berlin (Md.) and Cape Charles teams. It was won by Cape Charles, in a score of 13 to 5.

The racing was very exciting, although only two races were trotted to-day, the third being postponed on account of the weather. Summaries:

First race -- 2:40 class; premium, $150 -- Rubicon (G. M. Harden, Raleigh, N.C.), 1, 1, 1; Bonnie (Elkington Stock Farm, Eastville, Va.) 2, 2, 3; Crow (Ira C. Nelson, Richmond, Va.) 7, 3, 2; Lizzie (G. D. Wilkins, Onancock, Va.) 5, 5, 5; Lucy (W. E. Floyd, Bridgetown, Va.), 6, 6, 6; Effie (G. Relandon, Cobb's Creek, Va.), 3, 7, 7. Time, 2:32, 2:32 1/2; 2:30.

Second race -- 2-year-old class; Eastern Shore of Virginia; two best in three; premium, $100 -- Sweetness (W. E. Floyd, Bridgetown, Va.), 1, 1; Miss James (James Brothers, Kendall Grove, Va.), 2, 2; Syd (Elkington Stock Farm, Eastville, Va.), 3, 3. Time, 2:50, 2:44.

Mr. Frank Smith, of Buffalo, N.Y., is starting judge, and J. P. C. Kellum and A. T. Leatherbury, timekeepers.
