Onancock, August 22.

The Peninsular Fair at Tasley opened to-day. The crowd was large for a first day. The exhibits in the ladies' department were very many, and from an artistic standpoint quite surpassed any similar exhibition ever held on the Shore. The display of musical instruments is the largest ever seen here. The stock department is quite full, but not what it should be. The day being bright and breezy and the track being in superb condition, it was a field-day for the flyers entered in the races. The celebrated little mare Lamp Girl was in prime condition, and was, as usual, the favorite with the people.

The race in the 2:18 class was the chief event, and gave a brilliant close to the first day of the fair. In the 2:40 class, purse $200, there were three entries -- Rubico, J. W. Harden, 1, 1, 1; Bonnie, Elkington Stock Farm, 2, 2, 2; Crow, Ira C. Nelson, 3, 3, 3. Time -- 2:32 1/4, 2:32 1/4, 2:31 1/2.

In the second race, 2-year-olds, purse $100, there were three entries -- Miss James, James Brothers, 2, 2; Sweetness, Floyd Brothers, 1, 1; Syd, Elkington Stock Farm, 3, 3. Time -- 2:55, 2:52 1/2.

In the 2:16 trot, 2:18 pace, purse $300, there were three entries -- Lamp Girl, G. T. Coulbourn, 3, 1, 1, 1; Little Guy, Floyd Brothers, 1, 2, 2, 2; Bursar, H. P. James, 2, 3, 3, 3. Time -- 2:20, 2:17 1/4, 2:25 1/2, 2:25.

Thomas W. Blackstone, banker, and brother of Judge J. W. G. Blackstone, was operated upon this afternoon for appendicitis by Dr. Frank Martin, of Baltimore, assisted by Drs. Penning, of Baltimore, and Kellam, of this place. Drs. Ayres, Harmanson, and Lilliston also being present. Mr. Blackstone is in a critical condition at present.

William S. Mills, of this town, is also critically ill from injuries received in a runaway accident some weeks ago. Mr. Mills is quite old, and at present is in a dangerous condition.
