Infrastructure -- Public - Government : Life-saving service

Onancock.

Some one or two years ago Captain John B. Whealton, of Chincoteague Island, rescued during a most terrific storm three persons, whose lives had been despaired of, off Hatteras, imperiling his own life to such an extent that he was given up for lost several times, and after the Life Saving crew had refused to venture out. A Humane Association of New York presented him shortly afterwards with a handsome gold watch. Since that time a bill has been before Congress awarding him a gold medal, and the other day a favorable report was made upon it by a Committee of that body. Captain Whealton's act was highly complimented at the time.
