RECORD OF THE TROTTING AT THE CHESAPEAKE FAIR.

Good Attendance and Interesting Speeding -- The Time a Surprise to the Spectators.

[Special Dispatch to The Virginian.]

Cape Charles City, August 20. -- This was the second day of the Chesapeake Agricultural Fair, and it is estimated that there was nearly five thousand people in attendance. Norfolk sent over about two hundred people and Hampton had a contingent of about one hundred. The weather to-day, as yesterday, was good. The grand stand was comfortably filled, from which the people witnessed the race, being as cool and comfortable as one would expect to find it on a hotel balcony at Virginia Beach. The racing to-day was, however, passable in the excellence and interest, all being closely contested. The dark horses won in several races, the surprise of the day was the performance of Little Bets, a Northampton yearling, who won the first heat in the two years old race in 1.22 1-4.

Lady Russell, by Happy Russell, a high-bred, one-year-old, trotted with the two-year-olds, and came in second. The mile made by this yearling being a good 1.45 clip.

A shower came up during the second race, and the polls announced that the concluding heat of the 2:40 race and the 2:27 class, also on the programme, would come off at 12 m. to-morrow. The shower lasted only a short while, and was excellently well-timed, cooling the atmosphere and laying the dust.

The races to-morrow will be superior to any trotted yet, the 2:27 event being looked for with much interest, such horses as Richard Wilkes, Baltimore; Miss Thompson, western part of Virginia; Hunter Rye, Baltimore; Sygnet, Northampton, and Jack Hawley having been announced to start in it. Races to-day resulted as follows:

First Race -- Two year old class; 1-2 mile heats; purse, $50. Happy Lady, E. B. Emory, 2:2. Scott Monell, J. M. Ashby, 3:3. Little Bets, J. R. James, 1.1 Time, 1:22 1-2, 1:28 1-2.

Second Race -- 2:40 class, purse, $300; mile heats. John A., N. Nailor, 1.1. Vortex, O. B. Chenowith, 2.8, Neota, J. H. Morrow, 3.2, Selim Exile, Crook, Sturgis and Barkley, 4 dis. -- Time, 2:40, 2:37 1-2.
