AN EASTERN SHORE SHOOTING SCRAPE.

Moral -- Other violent crime

Captain Robert Ewell Thought to Be Fatally Wounded by Joseph Taylor.

Onancock, via Keller, Va., August 30.

Intelligence has been received here of a shooting affray that took place yesterday at Guilford, some ten miles north of this place on the Bayside, where Joseph Taylor shot and dangerously wounded Captain Robert Ewell. The difficulty seems to have originated from the fact that Taylor had been paying attention to a niece of Captain Ewell, to which the latter was opposed. Taylor persisted in his visits despite the warning and threats of Captain Ewell, and when the two men met at Guilford hot words passed and the men came to blows. Reports are conflicting. One account says that Captain Ewell struck Taylor, whereupon the latter drew his pistol and shot Ewell in the abdomen. According to another account the men after exchanging blows had been separated and Taylor returned and shot Ewell when he was unprotected and not expecting danger. According to the latest advices Ewell is sinking rapidly and is not expected to recover.
