Boss Bailey, a shoemaker at Savageville, in this county, celebrated his birthday Saturday by thrashing his wife, and then went to a place near by called Little Hell, where he got deep in liquor. After arming himself with a shotgun he went in pursuit of a negro name Sheppard, who he said had insulted him. He found the negro ploughing in a neighboring field and opened fire on him, peppering his left side and leg with shot. The negro took shelter behind his mule till Bailey could be disarmed and carried off. Bailey's wife and the negro swore out warrants against him, but when an officer went to arrest him he found that Bailey had left for parts unknown.
