ONANCOCK, Va., February 19. -- The colored people of Onancock and vicinity are very much exercised over what they consider to be a witch. A large black cat which made its appearance at the residence of Mr. N. K. Broughton, a resident of Onancock, a few days ago, is the alleged witch. The cat has destroyed a number of chickens belonging to the neighbors, and is supposed by the darkies to carry destruction in its wake. Several attempts have been made to destroy the animal, but each attempt has failed. Whenever the animal sees a human being it immediately disappears, and most diligent hunting fails to bring its hiding place to light.

It was one day found in a flour barrel. The head of the barrel was immediately tightly covered, and the cat was thought to have been captured at last. Mr. Broughton upon returning to the barrel was amazed to find that the mysterious animal had in some inexplicable way liberated itself. The barrel was just as it was left. The animal is of very large build and is jet black. Mr. Broughton's cook emphatically states that it is a witch, and cannot be induced to believe otherwise.

Accomac County Court convenes Monday, February 25th. Mrs. Virginia Taylor will be tried at this term for the alleged poisoning of her husband in December last. Much excitement is manifested. Large crowds will be in attendance each day. This is the first time in many years that a woman has been tried in Accomac county court for murder. The trial will probably consume a week or ten days. Hon. Henry Sage has not been engaged to assist the prosecution as previously stated. PARKE.
