Fields -- Crops - Sweet potatoes : Prices

Onancock.

The farmers on the Eastern Shore of Virginia are completely discouraged and many are almost ruined, financially. The poor prices received for the crops, so far, has only brought them in debt, while the prospects for good returns from their sweet potato crop, are poor. The entire year has been a bad one for the farmers. The strawberries, peas, round potatoes, and in fact, everything has hardly brought them enough to pay for the fertilizers used. Yellow potatoes, or sweets, as they are generally called, are now being shipped in quite large quantities, and are bringing about $2 per barrel, which is a tolerable fair price.
