During the last four years the menhaden have totally disappeared from the coast of Maine, and in the last three years they have been gradually leaving the New England coast. . . . On this account many eastern and some Long Island fishermen have removed their business and built factories in Chesapeake Bay. Since 1879 probably thirty manufactories have been put up there, but the fishing is light there for the present. . . . Virginia probably employs more fishermen.
