In the match game of base ball at the Fair Ground on Wednesday between the Stars of Onancock and the Metompkin Nine, the former were the victors. Until the seventh inning the score was an equal one -- but at its close, it stood 25 for the Stars, 13 for the Metompkin. The latter claim however, that the victory of the Stars was due to accessions of pitcher, catcher and second base man, with which they had recruited their nine from a Salisbury club.

We are authorized to state that an early dinner will be set by Geo. E. Winder on the occasion of the races, to come off at Pungoteague on Thursday, September 7th. The announcement is made, because at the last races Mr. Winder at the suggestion of many friends provided instead of a regular dinner an abundant supply of sandwiches &c near the race track. This having been unjustly commented upon by certain parties, it is proper to say that few people ever dined with him on race days on account of the distance of the race track from his hotel -- and that being the case friends suggested as we have said before that a lunch be served the people near the race track. With this explanation every one will see the injustice of the comments made, and we have only to add that we think the explanation was unnecessary, for one who has the reputation of providing so liberally for all the wants of his guests as our genial and courteous proprietor of the Pungoteague hotel.

Fields -- Fertilizer

It is a very great pleasure to us to be able to say to the farmers of our county, that the super-phosphate advertised through our columns by Messrs Parks & Co., Bowly's wharf and Pratt street, is giving satisfaction to all who have given it a trial. Of its merits, we can say upon as good authority as Mr. W. E. Jacob, former treasurer of our county, that he gave it a fair trial on potatoes, along with Peruvian guano, and fertilizer known as Orchilla with better results than either of the others. This taken in connection with the fact that it is cheaper than most standard fertilizers, must soon create an active demand for it among our people. A statement to be submitted by Mr. Jacob in reference to the matter will be published by us at an early date.

The treasurer of the Peninsula railroad company has paid over to Wm. H. B. Custis, the clerk of our county court ample funds to meet the damages assessed by the commissioners to landowners along the said road from the line of Maryland to the lands of Mr. Joseph G. Belote. Mr. Custis authorizes us to say, that he is ready to pay over to the parties entitled to receive it, such sums of money as were awarded them.

Infrastructure -- Utilities - Telegraph

A telegraph line will soon be established along the route of the Peninsula R.R. Fifteen hands at this time are engaged in clearing the way for that purpose, with a fair prospect of the construction of the telegraph as far as the court house of our county by the 15th of October.
