Eastville.

In the matter of population the Eastern Shore shows up very creditably, according to the latest census documents. Its colored population, however, increased at a greater ratio than the white, owing to a great deal of immigration from other sections of this State and also from North Carolina. In Northampton, by races, it is as follows: White, 6143; negro, 7627, or 1482 majority. In those of the voting age it stands: White, 1700; negro, 1669, or white 31 majority. In Accomac the population is 20,743 and 11,825, respectively.

A large number of negroes were brought into this county as laborers during the past ten years. One firm in Richmond placed about 500 of them. If the truckers could be induced to substitute white labor for the negro it would be much more advantageous. This is a promising field for good farm labor, prices ranging from $1 to $2.50 a day. There are some 500 oystermen now on the seaside water getting on an average of $2.50 a day.

The negro Dudley, who murdered Noel Jones, another negro, in Cape Charles, is still at large. One hundred dollars reward has been offered for his capture.
