BELOTE ADMITTED TO BAIL.

Moral -- Other violent crime

Charged With a Serious Crime, He Surrenders Himself.

Luther T. Belote, white, who has been sought by the law officers of the county for several months, was brought here Wednesday by Deputy Sheriff Lankford, having surrendered himself rather than remain away from his home any longer.

Belote, who is a young married man, is charged with having criminally assaulted his sister- in-law, Mrs. William Y. Johnson, at her home near Wardtown, on December 24th last. When the alleged crime was committed the residents of the neighborhood were considerably wrought up over the affair and appeals to the Governor resulted in the offer of a reward of $200 by the State for his capture. The county supervisors also offered a like sum.

Justice I. S. Ennis, of Wardtown, on Wednesday held Belote for the grand jury, he being afterwards admitted to bail by Bail Commissioner Robertson in the sum of $3,000 for his appearance at the next term of court. Before the magistrate a hearing was waived by Belote.

STRUCK BY A TRAIN.

Charles Finley Knocked Unconscious Along the Railroad.

Last Friday night a white man, under the influence of liquor, stopped at Birdsnest station and endeavored to secure more whiskey. Failing in his effort, he started down the railroad track towards Eastville. Ten minutes later a through freight came down the road and struck the man, knocking him from the track. The train stopped and search of the vicinity was made, but the man could not be found. Saturday morning he was found unconscious along the road. He was carried to the home of Deputy Sheriff C. M. Lankford and by him brought to Eastville, where his wounds were dressed by Dr. S. P. Nottingham, after which he was put in the county jail for safe keeping. On Monday the man gave his name as Charles Finley and his home as New York, and Jailer Widgen has written to his sister. The man's face is in a terrible condition. As soon as he recovers he will be released, as no charge is lodged against him.
