ACCOMAC COUNTY COURT.

Proceedings of January court, 1886:

Certificate of the qualification of Geo. T. Garrison as judge of the county court was returned to the court and recorded.

Letters of administration were granted as follows: Thomas G. Pitts on estate of N. Judson Kellam, deceased; McComas Justis on estate of John P. Justice, deceased.

Wm. R. Parramore, M.D., Thomas C. Kellam and Alfred J. Lilliston appointed as committee to inspect the county jail, appeared into court and took oath prescribed by law. Report made and filed.

F. M. Sturgis, J.P., paid into court $5, fine collected by him of Wm. James.

Thomas H. Mears, processioner of 12th district, resigned, and Asa T. Bundick was appointed in his place.

A commission was awarded, directed to Murray Hanson, commissioner for Virginia, residing in Baltimore, authorizing him to take and certify the attestation of Franklin W. Byrd, one of the witnesses of the last will and testament of Nathaniel F. Conquest, deceased.

Ordered that license granted Edward S. Johnson to sell as a bar room liquor dealer at Tasley station be transferred to his house at Mappsville.

The report of processioners for 2nd district St. George's Parish and 11th precinct of Accomac Parish returned to court and ordered to be filed and recorded.

Wm. J. Duncan was appointed surveyor of road precinct No. 23 of Pungoteague and Nathaniel A. Smith was appointed in his place.

W. J. Duncan was appointed surveyor of road precinct No. 22 of Pungoteague in place of James S. Humphreys, deceased.

Geo. D. Wise was appointed surveyor of road precinct No. 2 of Metompkin district in place of Thomas A. Duncan, deceased.

Geo. W. Walker was appointed surveyor of road precinct No. 26 of Pungoteague district in place of Berry Sturgis, removed from county.

John H. Marshall was appointed and qualified as guardian of William J. and Lilly L. Gunter, orphans of James H. Gunter, deceased.

James T. Weaver, inspector of oysters for 6th district made report of fees, fines and taxes collected by him for quarter ending, November 30th 1885, which was examined and ordered to be certified to Auditor of Public Accounts. Amount due by him for said quarter to Commonwealth was $824.37.

Ordered that County Treasurer pay in road and bridge matters; for services as surveyors of road, Geo. W. James, $6; James S. Hargis, $7; H. A. W. Corbin, $7 -- for material furnished to repair bridges, Geo. W. Glenn, $8; White & Copes $8.

Isaiah F. Justis was appointed and qualified as guardian of John E. and Nancy Catharine, orphans of John P. Justis, deceased.

Upon petition of William J. Gibb and others for a public road -- commissioners made their report and ordered to be filed.

Order entered for treasurer to pay John L. Gillespie, Edward T. White, Major T. Davis, W. H. Miles and A. J. Taylor, each $1 for one day's service as commissioners, on petition of Wm. J. Gibb and others for public road.

An account for $72 for board of jury in Sturgis' case was examined, allowed and ordered to be certified to auditor of public accounts.

The following fiduciary accounts were examined, confirmed, and ordered to be recorded: Upshur T. Bradford, guardian, George A. and Bessie A. Fentress; John W. Hyslop, guardian, Georgia S., Edwin A. and Jackson L. Walter; A. J. Lilliston, administrator of George H. Bundick, deceased; Wm. T. Mason , administrator of Thos. W. Custis, deceased; Samuel J. Shield, administrator of Jas. S. Humphrey, deceased; John M. Fosque, administrator of Edward P. East, deceased, and Elizabeth A. Parker, deceased; John M. Parker, executor of Revel Parker, deceased; Samuel T. Ross, administrator of John M. Parker, deceased; Benjamin W. Mears, trustee with John W. Savage's trust fund.

Commonwealth vs. Thomas Watson on an indictment. Dismissed on motion of attorney for Commonwealth.

Commonwealth vs. Horace Kellam, (on indictment). Tried, convicted and fined $20 and costs.

Commonwealth vs. John R. Sturgis, (on indictment for murder). Tried, convicted (not of murder in 1st or 2nd degree, but of voluntary manslaughter) and sentenced to penitentiary for five years.

Ex parte: John D. Grant, administrator of Edward Melson, deceased. Report filed November 20th, 1885, confirmed, and Gunter & Blackstone ordered to check on Marine bank, for interest accumulated on fund in bank and pay taxes and levies due on said fund, cost of petition not heretofore paid, and to redeposit balance, if any.

John W. Gillet, administrator with will annexed of George W. Barnes, deceased, vs. Frank Barnes et als. (on a petition). Order entered, to deposit money in bank.

Ex parte: The petition of R. Ellison Rue's administrator. Order entered for payment of certain expenses of infant of R. Ellison Rue out of income, and to deposit principal in Marine bank.

Ordered, that Maurice Lewis purchase 450 feet of white oak timber and six pounds of nails for repair of Drummond's mill bridge.

Order entered appointing John Edward Mears, commissioner, to view the bridge over head of Machipungo creek, and report its condition, necessity of rebuilding, &c.

Order entered, allowing James E. Shreves $50 for guarding and taking care of the canoe of J. F. Lawson et als., non residents, captured by John S. Gaskins, captain on the Oyster Police Force, for taking oysters in Virginia waters without license.
