ACCOMAC COUNTY COURT.

Proceedings, May Term, 1896.

Perry A. Leatherbury qualified as administrator of his deceased wife, Leah A. Leatherbury.

Geo. F. Parker qualified as guardian of Rebecca Gardner, infant child of William H. Gardner.

Last will of William S. Kellam was proved and Benjamin T. Gunter qualified as executor.

Horace P. Nock qualified as guardian of his infant children, Mabel J. and James T. Nock.

Michael Glennan executed an additional bond as guardian of Elizabeth and Anna Belle Scarburgh children of Dr. G. T. Scarburgh.

William J. Wessels qualified as road surveyor of election district of Mappsville for term of two years beginning July 1st, 1896.

Following fiduciary accounts were confirmed: Audits of estates of Wesley Onions, Samuel Lankford and Samuel C. Mason, deceased; orphan accounts of Virginia C. and Annie F. Pitts, Thomas L. and Mary E. Hinman, Margie, Lee, William T. and James T. Gibbons; trust accounts of Elizabeth M. Floyd, Lucinda E. Walker, &c., James F. Newman and Geo. E. Davis and wife.

The list of drawn jurors for the year ending May term, 1897, was made out and placed in box by judge.

D. M. Merritt, Geo. C. Burch and William Taylor, colored, who had been recognized by Emory Maffitt, J.P., to answer indictments for selling intoxicating liquors unlawfully, appeared in accordance with their recognizances and were discharged from same, the court having no jurisdiction to try said offences.

The regular grand jury was empannelled and returned as true bills, indictments against Carr Russell for feloniously breaking and entering a hen-house with intent to commit larceny and against William Sample for grand larceny in stealing a cow. Russell was tried, convicted and sentenced to 30 days in jail to pay fine of $5 and costs of prosecution. Sample was tried, convicted and sentenced to 6 months in jail and to pay a fine of $5 and costs of prosecution.

Accounts against Commonwealth in criminal and lunacy cases were entered as follows: Thos. G. Clayton, J.P., $1; John D. Watts, J.P., $2; S. T. Taylor, special constable, $8.79; Wm. M. Taylor, J.P., $7.50; Jos. L. Cooper, J.P., $1; jailer, $67.15; attorney for Commonwealth, $70.

Lloyd F. J. Wilson and Joseph L. Cooper qualified as notaries public for county of Accomac.

John F. Powell was appointed and qualified as inspector of oysters for district No. 1, and Wm. J. Barnes was appointed and qualified as inspector of oysters for district No. 6.

Authority to catch fish to be manufactured into oil or manure was granted to the Chesapeake Navigation and Manufacturing Company of Harborton, to John W. and Wm. C. Bunting and to Wm. H. Marsh & Bros.

Authority to manufacture oil or manure from alewives or menhaden was granted to John W. and Wm. C. Bunting.

Ex parte: Petition of Geo. W. Hinman's admr. Report of James H. Fletcher Jr., filed and confirmed.

Ex parte: Petition of Clarence P. Custis, &c's guardian. Report of J. W. G. Blackstone filed and confirmed.

Joseph W. Moore, colored, was granted authority to celebrate the rites of matrimony.

Ex parte: Petition of Alfred Mapp's guardian (L. Floyd Nock). Petition filed and cause referred to commissioner of accounts.

Ex parte: Petition of Charlotte F. Harmon &c.'s acting guardian (Jas. E. W. Figgs). Petition filed and referred to commissioner of accounts.

On exceptions to the audit of Wm. T. Sample, colored, filed by Henry Battaile. Exceptions sustained in part and party overruled and audit recommitted to commissioner with instructions; and certificated of facts proved, entered by the court, to permit an appeal if desired.
