ACCOMAC COUNTY COURT.

Proceedings, August Term, 1896.

The qualification of Hon. J. W. G. Blackstone, judge of the county court of Accomac, was received and recorded.

The qualifications of Dr. Jos. R. Brodwater, as coroner for Accomac Parish, and of Dr. Geo. L. Ames, as coroner of St. George Parish, were received and recorded.

The grand jury list for 1896-97 was handed to the clerk by the judge.

The oaths of office subscribed by Wm. O. Lewis, Noah E. Miles John R. Drewer, Isaac W. Young and John W. Drewer, councilmen for the town of Saxis, were returned and recorded.

Last will of John W. Gillet was proved and J. W. G. Blackstone, Thos. W. Blackstone, and Benjamin T. Gunter qualified as executors.

The resolution of respect adopted by the members of the bar and officers of the court, upon the resignation of Judge Gillet, were handed to the court and recorded.

The last will of J. W. A. Elliott was proved and ordered to be recorded.

Spencer F. Rogers qualified as administrator of Isaac T. Wright; Wm. T. Parks Jr., and John T. White as administrators of Wm. T. Parks; N. B. Wescott as administrator of Rachel Phillips; and Robert L. Hopkins as administrator of T. A. Evans; N. B. Wescott qualified as guardian of Margaret Esther Wescott; R. L. Hopkins as guardian of Crosdale R. Evans; and James H. Fletcher Jr. as guardian of Vinnie L., and Cynthia T. Chandler.

Dr. Geo. T. Scarburgh resigned as physician to the jail and Dr. John H. Ayres was appointed in his place.

Thos. B. James qualified as road surveyor for election district of Onancock.

Thos. B. Gillespie was appointed and qualified as justice of peace for Metompkin district to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William T. Parks.

Roy D. White was appointed and qualified as inspector of oysters for district No. 3.

A certificate required by law was granted to John R. Rew to obtain law license.

Following fiduciary accounts were confirmed and ordered to be recorded: Orphans accounts of Emerson T., George H., and Essie Wescott, Alice M. Custis nee Bull, Otho Judson, Francis J., Maggie S., and Bessie C. Kellam, Bessie L. Sturgis nee Bull, and Sarah Y. Anderson; administration accounts of Estella F. Anderson, Wm. D. Waters, Wm. H. Marshall, Edward J. Taylor, John S. Johnson and T. B. C. Gibb; Wm. F. Drummond's account with committee and orphan accounts of Carroll C. Kellam and Oscar L. Powell.

Petition of John F. Nelson Jr. and others was filed for a public road and viewers appointed.

Last will of Leah Powell was proved and ordered to be recorded.

John H. Major was discharged from jail, having served his term and being unable to pay fine and costs.

Orders payable out of State treasury were entered as follows: For sheriff, $19; jailer, $178.55; James B. Taylor, constable, $16.15; Tankard G. Kellam, constable, $13.20 and Thos. G. Clayton, J.P., $1; F. Drummond, M.D., $7.50; G. T. Scarburgh, M.D., $9; M. Oldham Jr., clerk, $47 and $25.

Ex parte: Petition of Eliza Marshall, &c's., late guardian. Order for L. Floyd Nock to withdraw funds from Marine Bank, pay costs and taxes and remove cause from docket.

O. W. Godwin's administrator, appellant, vs. Louis C. H. Taylor, appellee. Judgment of J. P. reversed and judgment for appellant for amount of his claim.

Order entered authorizing county treasurer to check for 1895 and 1896 taxes and clerk's fee in suit of Rose Belote, widow, vs. William J. Belote administrators.

A special grand jury was empanelled and returned true bills: indictment against William Teagle for malicious shooting and cutting with intent to maim, &c. -- tried, convicted, sent to jail for four months and fined $25 and costs of prosecution; indictment against Geo. W. Powell, William Moore and Aaron Byrd for catching crabs feloniously in Virginia waters -- defendants made default and surety paid penalties of bond into court; an indictment against Henry Brown for rape -- defendant tried and acquitted; and "not true bill" indictment against John Wharton, alias John Candis, for burglary.
