65th CONGRESS, 3d Session.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

DOCUMENT No. 1776.

WATER SUPPLY FOR CAPE CHARLES QUARANTINE STATION.

LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY, SUBMITTING AN ESTIMATE OF APPROPRIATION TO ENABLE THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY TO PROVIDE WATER SUPPLY FOR CAPE CHARLES QUARANTINE STATION.

FEBRUARY 8, 1919.--Referred to the Committee on Appropriations and ordered to be printed.

TREASURY DEPARTMENT,
OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY,
Washington,

February 7, 1919.

SIR: I have the honor to submit herewith the following estimate of appropriation, with the recommendation that it be given favorable consideration for inclusion in the sundry civil appropriation bill for the fiscal year 1920, now pending:

Cape Charles, Va., Quarantine Station: To enable the Secretary of the Treasury to provide water supply for the Cape Charles Quarantine Station....... $20,000

Note. -- It was originally contemplated to obtain water for this station from deep wells on Craney Island, the site of said station, but after a thorough study and investigation by the advisory engineer of the War Department and an expert from the Geological Survey, the Secretary of War, in a letter addressed to the Secretary of the Treasury, under date of January 29, 1919, points out the necessity for obtaining a supply water from a source other than from deep wells drilled on the island, and requests that an appropriation be obtained for this purpose.

The above estimate is considered sufficient to enable the department to provide an adequate and proper supply of water for the purpose above mentioned.

Respectfully,

CARTER GLASS, Secretary.
The SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
Washington, D. C.
